Type a name, or paste a LinkedIn profile URL.
How to review your manager
- Step 1
Find your manager
Search by name, or paste their LinkedIn profile URL. If they aren't on RateMyColleague yet, the URL adds them in one step.
- Step 2
Rate them and describe it
Sign in with Google, choose “My manager” as your working relationship, and write what working for them was really like.
- Step 3
A moderator checks it
Every review is read before it's published. Negative opinions are allowed; harassment, private information and spam are not.
What you rate
Each category is rated from 1 to 5 stars, and you say whether you would work with them again. Leadership is optional; everything else is required.
- Overall experience
- What it was like to work for them, all things considered.
- Communication
- Clear expectations, useful feedback, and keeping the team in the loop.
- Professionalism
- How they conducted themselves and treated the people around them.
- Leadership / management
- Setting direction, supporting your growth, and handling problems.
- Fairness
- Consistent decisions and reasonable expectations of the team.
- Reliability
- Following through on what they said they would do.
Writing a review their next team can use
Read the review guidelines- Describe specific situations: how they gave feedback, ran meetings, set priorities or handled a deadline going wrong.
- Give a balanced picture: what went well as well as what didn't.
- Stick to how they work. Leave out their looks, age, family and private life.
- Write about your own experience only, not what you heard from others.
- Don't say they broke the law, discriminate, or were fired or disciplined: those claims are removed. Report misconduct to HR or the relevant agency (in the U.S., for example, the EEOC).
- If you're angry, give it a day before you post.
Questions about rating your manager
Anonymous to the public, accountable to moderators.
- Will my manager know I wrote the review?
- You can post anonymously, so your name doesn't appear on the review. Your account is known to our moderators, and we don't give anyone reviewers' identities except when the law requires it. Your manager may still recognize details you mention, so leave out anything that would identify you if that worries you.
- Is my manager notified about my review?
- Only if they have claimed their profile. People who claim their profile are told when a new review is published, and they can respond to it publicly.
- Can a manager get a negative review removed?
- Not for being negative. Reviews are removed only if they break the review guidelines. Anyone can ask a moderator to take another look at a review, and we never accept payment to remove or change one.
- Do I need an account?
- You need to sign in with Google to write a review. Anyone can read published reviews without an account.
- What if my manager isn't on RateMyColleague?
- Paste their LinkedIn profile URL into the search box. If nobody has added them yet, you can add them in one step and write the first review.
- Can I review a coworker or someone who reported to me?
- Yes. You can review anyone you have worked with firsthand: a colleague, a manager, a direct report or a client. One review per person.
